Peer Review Process

All articles submitted to Secularism and Nonreligion are initially assessed by an Editor, who decides whether or not the article is suitable for peer review. Submissions considered suitable for peer review are assigned to one or more independent experts, who assess the article for clarity, validity, and sound methodology. Article types that are not peer reviewed will undergo full editorial review by one or more of the editorial team.

Secularism and Nonreligion operates a closed peer review process, meaning that reviewers will not know author details and will themselves remain anonymous to the author. The review period is expected to take no longer than three weeks. Reviewers are asked to provide formative feedback, even if an article is not deemed suitable for publication in the journal.

Articles are reviewed based on the importance and quality of the research as well as its contribution to the academic body of knowledge. Quality of writing is also an important criteria; poorly written articles will not be accepted.

Based on the reviewer reports the handling editor will make a recommendation for rejection, minor or major revisions, or acceptance. Overall editorial responsibility rests with the journal’s Editors-in-Chief, who are supported by an expert, international Editorial Board
